THE PROJECT

36 Days of Type is a popular challenge open to all creatives, inviting them to create a new letter or number each day for 36 days or to participate by creating their favorite letter(s) or number(s). This is the second time I have participated in the challenge, but this time, I only participated in the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet.

For this new series, my main idea was to have fungi and plants as the scene's protagonists. I wish to invite the viewers into various fantastical and surrealistic animated worlds endlessly looping so all the animations are in constant motion without interferences, contemplating them indefinitely.

I approached this project as a “Phygital” work, aiming to combine the physical and digital worlds. I carefully created all the letters using air-hardening clay. Then, through photogrammetry, I could capture and bring all these abstract typographic sculptures from the physical to the digital world.

The very talented Aaron Graham created all the music & sounds. We had a lot of fun on this project; please check his work, too.

THE ANIMATION

All letters have their specific mushrooms and vibes, and each has its own music, carefully created by Aaron Grahams. Click on the pictures below to watch them on Instagram.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Using air-hardening clay, I introduced myself to clay modeling, testing a new medium I wanted to try for a long time. When each letter was created and dry, I photographed them using a 360° turntable to extract all necessary data for recreating the object in 3D software. After this crucial step, the model was ready for simulation and animation in any other 3D software at this stage. 

THE MUSHROOMS

Inspired by real-life species, I created a series of mushrooms and slime molds. Experimenting with settings and mimicking the natural behavior of airborne spores was super fun. The diversity of shapes and colors made the creative process even more enjoyable.

THE BOOK

I'm honored for the release of this book called "Au coeur du vivant. Les liens entre les artistes et la nature" (At the Heart of the Living. The Links Between Artists and Nature) by Valérie Belmokhtar and the Pyramid-edition, showcasing some of my work related to this project.

The book's subject is about the relationship between artists and nature, for whom art is a way to reconnect with the living and celebrate its diversity and resilience. It showcases many talented artists from around the globe, and I highly recommend you get your hands on it. The book is available on their website and in Fnac stores, museum bookstores, and cultural places (only in French).
